- How did you go about translating Gotham City into these building sculptures?
First I had to understand what made Gotham such an iconic city; architecturally it blends a variety of styles such as Art Deco and Retrofuturism, but with a Gothic Revival twist, which gives it an intimidating, oppressing and foreboding appearance and presence. Since 3D-printed minis work best with simplified shapes, we leaned into a more streamlined Art Deco and Retrofuturism approach, with less emphasis on the Gothic Revival elements. - Were there any buildings or examples you used as references when sculpting for Enemies of Gotham City?
I was offered a few real-world references by the art team; the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building to name a few, but I also found numerous images of old Art Deco or 50s-style buildings online which helped inspire and inform a lot of the shape language in all of the buildings I designed. - How are you able to balance Gotham City aesthetics with your own design ideas?
I actually happen to be a big fan of both Art Deco and Retrofuturism, so my designs tend to naturally lean toward that direction! I believe it all comes down to understanding what makes a structure feel like it belongs to a specific era or location, and almost putting yourself in the shoes of the architects of said location. Once you grasp the shape language of the style, your own design voice emerges naturally as you problem-solve. - Are there any differences in your workflow when designing a building at this scale compared to a larger-sized project?
Absolutely! For small 3D-printed models, the silhouette is everything. I utilize the principle of “big, medium, small” and make sure that even the smallest parts remain legible when sized down. On larger projects, you can add endless details to sell the design, but with minis, you have to be much more selective about which elements to include. It’s a challenge I personally quite enjoy, and it often pushes my designs in directions I wouldn’t explore at larger scales. - Which techniques did you use to design aspects of the game like the fire/ice/vine pieces?
I started out with designing a rough base in Blender for all the pieces, and eventually moved all of the sculpts to Substance 3D Modeler for further refinement in VR. I find VR sculpting both faster and more creatively flexible than flatscreen workflows, and it’s generally my go-to way of sculpting in 3D. - Which game component that you created is your favorite and why? I’d have to say the plant sculpt, as I spent the most time with it in VR and it just has so much personality. I’d also highlight the Police Building, as it’s the most visually striking and unique out of all the buildings, and it really embodies that classic Art Deco style.

We are thrilled to feature the talented Sergio Sandoval in this Artist Spotlight. Sergio made his debut in the early 1990s drawing comic books and covers for Comic Forum (Spain). Since then, he has worked on several DC projects and is no stranger to capturing the legendary “Dark Deco”, bold silhouettes, and moody noir inspired aesthetic fans of Batman
: The Animated Series know well. Sergio Sandoval’s contributions to the Enemies of
Gotham City

The box packaging serves as the front facing introduction to the game’s world, utilizing Sandoval’s signature angular lines and bold, modern comic style. We asked Sandoval how he gave each of these iconic villains their own spotlight on the box art, despite their competingly large personalities. Sergio responded “You have to think about each character’s personality, their special abilities, and how they face their enemies. Once you have that clear, you have to think about the sizes of each of them, so that they are all different, but occupy a similar space in the illustration. If the character is very small, you can add more striking elements, and if it is very large, you can place it behind the other characters. The composition must be balanced and none of them should stand out too much above the others”. Sandoval also emphasized how important shadows, highlights, and colors are when depicting Batman
: The Animated Series’ Gotham City
. Sergio explained, “Batman
: The Animated Series is a work with a very defined character in terms of color and drawing. But Gotham
is a very dark city, which contrasts with its blue and electric red skies. This influences the very strong lighting for the characters, as if they were illuminated by a flashlight in the dark. This gives them very vivid colors and very defined shadows”.

Sergio Sadoval was also the mastermind behind creating the Villain Boards for the Enemies of
Gotham City
game. We asked him how he used background art to add to the story and emotion tied to each villain. To which he responded, “That was a really easy task, since these characters have so many stories behind them and it was very easy to capture the scenes that Ricky Le (Art Acquisition Coordinator at Upper Deck) and Caleb Cleveland (Visual Art Specialist at Upper Deck) proposed to me”. Sergio’s favorite Villain Board to work on was Clayface
. He said “He’s a character who, despite having a fairly specific anatomical structure, is very irregular and very brutal. This gives me a lot of flexibility to exaggerate the different aspects I like best, such as his big arms or hands, and draw the roughness of his skin however I want. I love it!”.

Before we wrapped up, we asked Sergio what he wants players to be most excited about when they see the box art for the first time. Sergio replied, “Show them a cover dedicated solely to the villains! Highlight how exceptional Batman’s
villains are and that this time they are the center of attention. A great villain must be on par with a great hero”. From the striking presence of the box art on your shelf to the captivating detail of each Villain Board, this game is a dream come true for fans of Batman
: The Animated Series. Whether you are a die hard fan of Sandoval’s iconic illustrations or a tabletop game enthusiast, the Enemies of
Gotham City
release is one you won’t want to miss! Follow along to learn more about the various artists that contributed to the creation of Enemies of

Sculpting Gotham City’s™ Most Notorious Villains: An Interview With Amos Hemsley on Enemies of™ Gotham City™ Miniatures
In this Artist Spotlight, we are thrilled to feature Amos Hemsley, the 3D sculptor behind the stunning miniatures in the new Enemies of
Gotham City
tabletop game. From an early age, Amos Hemsley was immersed in comic books, action figures, and memorabilia that were commonplace for the Bronze age of comic books. Movies and television shows also caught his eye, such as great films like Superman
the Movie, Spider-man
, and the 1960s Batman
TV series. Amos has spent his career translating the dynamic energy of comic books and film into tangible art. From the broad-shouldered silhouette of the Dark Knight
to the theatrical menace of The Joker
, Amos’s work captures the fluid, minimalist elegance that made Batman: The Animated Series a masterpiece. Join us as we go behind the scenes with Amos to discuss his journey sculpting the legendary heroes and villains in Enemies of
Gotham City

The Enemies of
Gotham City
game is inspired by the iconic and beloved Batman
: The Animated Series. With so many fans sharing Amos’s enthusiasm for the series he truly wanted to create something that the fans will love. One of Amos’s biggest challenges in sculpting the well known DC characters was trying to land a definitive version that would do the series and game justice. Amos said “these characters have been cherished for decades. So I have to do my part”.

Sculpting well-known and highly recognizable characters at such a small scale is no easy feat. With the Enemies of
Gotham City
’s tallest miniature measuring about 50 mm, every detail counts. Amos explained that getting each feature just right was doable through a 3D sculpting program called ZBrush, which allows him to go back and zoom in to apply little details once the base of the sculpture is completed. To coincide with this, we asked Amos how he was able to convey the personalities and might of these characters, despite them being this small. To that he responded “that part is based on the brilliant art direction of Caleb Cleveland (Visual Art Specialist at Upper Deck). He’ll sketch the pose that he’d like for the character to be in. I’ll then translate what I see to 3D incorporating that desired feeling”.

Before we wrapped up our conversation, we asked Amos one final question about the impact he hopes his work will have when fans see the Enemies of
Gotham City
miniatures for the first time. Amos shared, “When I was a kid I’d look up and pretend that Superman
flew by as he raced to stop Bizarro
from causing a disaster. There was this raw emotion that overtook me. That passion has stayed with me ever since. I’d like for the fans to be inspired to create their own epic battles with these figures”. Whether you are a DC fan or tabletop gamer the Enemies of
Gotham City
miniatures are truly spectacular! Follow along to learn more about the various artists that contributed to the creation of Enemies of
